REALTalk – The Community of Mukai Farm and Garden

March 23rd, 2021 by Susan McCabe

Mukai Farm and Garden on Vashon is home to the unique Island history of Japanese Americans. B.D. (Denichiro) Mukai established the farm in 1926 to grow strawberries. His innovations in preserving and packaging strawberries allowed him to ship them nationwide and contributed to the Island’s reputation as a mecca for the sweet red fruit. The family was exiled during WWII and the Mukai property passed through multiple hands until the Friends of Mukai acquired it in 2016. Since then this group of Japanese Americans and their allies have been restoring Mukai to its original glory and then some. In the process, several Japanese American islanders found one another and revitalized a community.

The women of this renewed community share a special bond and Mukai Board President, Rita Brogan will join host Susan McCabe to tell the stories of blending cultures within families and through generations. Tune in. It’s sure to be REAL.
