Jones’ versatility aided him in the shape-shifting role of film composer, as his ability to create elegant string arrangements, jazzy experiments, or nasty funk energized a wide array of movie styles, from In the Heat of the Night to In Cold Blood (with a couple of unforgettable TV themes included).
